The film is a spin-off of 2013's The Conjuring, 2016's The Conjuring 2 and is the 6th film in the Conjuring establishment.

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga repeat their parts as paranormal specialists Ed and Lorraine Warren from the initial two movies. The film concerns The Warrens going to the guide of the Smurl family whose West Pittston, Pennsylvania home is under assault from powerful powers from 1974 to 1989.
